Transitional Space

This transitional part of my life has not quite been what I expected.  Not that I truly know what I expected anyway, as I wavered between thinking I would be twiddling my thumbs in a hotel room with nothing to do and worrying that there would not be enough time.  Neither is quite true.  We have been busy but not too busy, and this transitional period is proving to be a good introduction to our new home before we get down to the serious work of settling in.

We went to a fabulous Christmas party at this house where we met some very interesting people, and perhaps a few future friends, but all the faces are mostly blurred together in my mind at this point.  It was very generous of our hostess to invite us to her home at the last minute, and it was a wonderful welcome to our new city.

I have begun reading again, and knitting, although it looks likely that I shipped far too many books and knitting projects to myself in that pre-arrival fear of having nothing to do.

We have also been driving around a bit, exploring neighborhoods, looking into stores, eating out occasionally.  We even took a drive to Nashville once, a one day driving extravaganza, which we found very refreshing way to clear our heads when we were overwhelmed with the abundance of overly-traditional over-stuffed furniture we keep finding in showrooms.   It was a beautiful drive and although I love driving, I have occasionally wished that I was once again in the passenger seat if only so that I could snap photos en route.

IMG_0012This temporary abode and transitional life is quite satisfying and all that I feel is missing is time to myself, time for considered thought, time to allow the mind to roam freely, time for blogging.  I do have a computer and internet access, and although it can difficult to share computer time from other distractions, I do manage the occasional bit of cyber-wandering.

Overall,  this interlude is proving both beneficial and thought-provoking in ways I had not anticipated, the results of which are sure to be revealed in time.

I’m so happy that you are settling in and that the house is progressing. I’m also glad that you are meeting the neighbors and canvassing the neighborhood.
Here’s hoping the New Year brings you many new memories in your new home and much time to sew and knit to your content!

What a lovely pensive post. Seems the word “liminal,” one of my favorites, was invented for times such as these.

liminal — that is exactly the word I was racking my brain over this morning to no avail.  Thank you and have a Happy New Year.

    Yes, liminal, that’s the word.
I was thinking of you today, am glad you’re out and about exploring with your sweetie.
Happy New Year to you both!

I’m impressed by how well you’re using this suspended time. Your cat certainly looks as if she’s settled in well, making herself right at home (if I’ve got gender wrong, please apologize on my behalf). You seem to be creating a home already in the sense of getting to know your surroundings, at the very least, and the house itself, and furnishings, the nesting, will surely fall into place as the year progresses. All the best for making yourself at home in 2012!

Mater, I do think this transitional time has proven to be a good thing and having a sense of familiarity with the place should make the settling in and nesting a little easier. I am more rested and relaxed and looking forward to the unpacking and making this place a home in all ways possible.

What is it with cats and laptops and keyboards?
LOL, I just got a little main coon in November, and he lays exactly like the kitty in your photo.
They know what to block to get some attention 😉
