Easter Pink

Pink and easter always go together in my mind, something to do with spring and rebirth and promise I suppose, although why pink instead of green or blue, I'm not sure.  The intellectual side of me, the student of history and literature, always remembers that not that long ago pink was considered much too strong a color for girls, even watered down as it is, still too much of a reminder of red with its associations of warriors and blood.  Good thing we are at least somewhat past those days, although I still adore a man in a pink shirt.

Anyway, the pink Lafayette 148 New York dress came in two weeks ago and seeing as it was so close, I decided I need a new Easter dress this year and that pink cotton would be perfect.  This picture was taken after Easter services and is a little rumpled but still looking good.  I went to the earliest full service which meant I had to get G out of bed early and didn't have time for pre-departure photos, but it was worthwhile.  Afterwards I was in such a good mood because I always love the music at the Easter services and most of the congregation joined in for the Halleluliah Chorus at the end.  I sang the alto part, which I still remember from when my junior high school choir sang the entire Messiah, as well as those high school years in the church choir; I didn't pass the audition for our high school choir.  Of course this time I  had the orchestra and the choir to help keep me on track as well, and as usual, the higher alto notes are out of my range so I had to drop down to tenor.  That too brought up great memories of when a friend and I would trade parts sometimes in church and he would sing alto and I would sing tenor.  I don't think the organist appreciated our efforts but we had fun.

Anyway I think my Easter-Pink association probably dates back to a particular pink Easter dress I had as a child.  It was a  pretty full-skirted number which had a little off white bolero with it.  I adored that dress and I dreamed of pink patent mary janes to wear with it.  I remember begging and whining for those shoes, making a terrible nuisance of myself, and being told they were completely impractical.  And yet, on Easter morning there they were, waiting for me to wear with my pretty pink dress.  I held on to those shoes for years, until there was no chance of even squeezing my foot into them.  They made me so happy; the memory of them still does.  I still like having a pair of pink shoes in my closet, like this pair of Manolos, which are at least 7 or 8 years old.

This post is part of Visible Monday.  Pop on over and see what others are wearing.  And also take a peek at the pretty pink tulips Materfamilias posted yesterday. Don't you think they would look just perfect with my dress?  Easter and pink just go together.

I like the dress on You! And I feel happy that you feel happy yourself.
Personally, I´d associate yellow with Easter, though could not imagine wearing yellow alone on myself. Yellow on you would be ok too.
So great, that you got the shoes you had wished for!

Mette, how interesting that you associate yellow with Easter!  I can imagine it, all the little yellow chicks and yellow gingham.  It must have been the shoes.

Wow! That looks fabulous on you! What a gorgeous colour and what a perfect dress (the length is perfect). So much I like about this post, the memories of choir (I sing alto as well, although haven’t been in a choir for eons), of pink patent shoes — and those Manolos! I’m trying to think, now, where I can wear my pink Fluevog kitten-heels. They haven’t had an outing for far too long.

This dress is so lovely, Mardel. And your shoes too – just right. I enjoyed reading your memories of choir-singing and switching parts! Thanks so much for sharing this with Visible Monday.

You look beautiful in your new dress! And it seems the kind you can dress up or down (swapping heels for sandals.) Great pick!

That’s a nice looking dress. Does it wrap or just have that tie at the waist?
My church had a Halleluliah Chorus at the end. It brings anybody who’se ever sung out!

It’s a beautiful dress, both the color and the ruffled collar. The anecdote about the Mary Janes is wonderful…wishes do come true.

That looks just great. And those shoes are the perfect touch, pink, but a little edgy.

Oh, I love the pink patent shoe story. So sweet!

Thank you Mater!  It is perfect isnt it. I am really impressed with the fit of Lafayette 148 on me generally.  And yes, your pink kitten-heels need an outing.  My pink shoes dont get out enough either but they love the opportunity.
Im glad you liked the way the post wove together the memories with the present, it wasnt quite what I intended when I started out, at least not consciously.

Thank you Patti.  I guess I was channeling that younger self with her pink dress and pink shoes.  Nice spring memories.

Duchesse, it is a dress I can dress up or down and I am looking forward to wearing it this summer.  It was hard, in fact to wait two weeks, especially since the weather was warm then.  At least the warmth held out until I wore it the first time.

Rose, it just ties, which gives you a little room for adjustment if needed or desired.
The Hallelujah chorus seems to make everyone happy too. Joyful music.

Thanks for the memories. Was Barbara still the organist at that time or had Duncan taken the position? When Rebecca D comes to visit her parents at Christmas, we always try to find a sing-along Messiah opportunity or a perfomance (and sing softly anyway). Happy Easter! Alleluia!

Yes, Terri, sometimes they do.  We should hold on tightly to those memories.

Lisa, thank you.  A few years ago I was at a sewing seminar in San Francisco and we were having a style lesson where we were supposed to find clothes that suited our style.  I was still in my hold-over-from-work phase and said something like I am a boring person who wears boring clothes in my plain, Armani-esque suits.  Someone looked at me and said that wasnt true, that my shoes werent the shoes of a boring person.   It took me a while to realize that my feet spoke the truth, and the rest was just a mask.

That dress was made for you Mardel! So flattering. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed singing the Halleluiah chorus. It’s nice to remember your part, isn’t it? We sang Haydn’s Achieved is the Glorious Work from the Creation — our music director said Achieved is modeled on the Halleluiah chorus.
