Merry Christmas Mermaid

Mermaid is finished! and even before my self-imposed deadline of Christmas eve, but long after I had originally hoped.

I can’t get a single picture of me with the sweater hanging straight.  Am I really that crooked?  If so, I need to start seriously altering my sweaters so that they are more straight on the model (me) and less straight on the table.  I shall see how it works over the next few days.  It is possible that I am just a little more off-kilter than usual today.

Aside from the photographic asymmetericality I love the sweater, could hardly take it off last night when I finished, although I was not about to take a picture of me wearing it over my sweatpants.  G even noticed before I asked him what he thought, and kept raving about how wonderful it looked.  By all measures, a success.  It was even an enjoyable knit, and I will be making another, but as previously stated, not right away.  I really would like it to be longer, with a bit more flare.  Remember I shortened the godets and make it longer waisted.  The original pattern was far too short waisted for me, and although this looks nice, it would look even nicer if it were longer with more flare and shaping over the hips.

Still, I consider it quite a success.

Very, very, pretty. And it makes you look so thin! I did notice there was less flare than the sample I saw in the store, but that just gives it a more casual look.
If it were for me, I’d knit version 2 in yarn with a bit more sheen. I’m not that impressed with the ‘kit’ yarn. Maybe shinier yarn, more flare=a dressier jacket?

It looks wonderful and just in time to show it off during the holidays.

    Oh, wonderful, wonderful!
An excellent job on a beautiful sweater!
Thank you so much for sharing the process with us… it made what looked like an intimidating knit quite a bit friendlier. I am thinking that a kit for Mermaid is definitely going on my wish list.

Mardel: your sweater looks great! I’m thinking that the flare is just right, it will pass the test of time and you’ll be happy with it for many years. It’s rather horrible trying to take a good photo and model at the same time, isn’t it? It never works quite right for me…

Hello, Mardel – I am having a heck of a time locating the actual, finished measurement of a Mermaid. I’m trying to decide between the Medium and the Large, and can’t determine whether the measurements on the pattern account for ease or not. I wonder if you’d be willing to measure your sweater and let me know what you come up with. Thanks so much! Selma Kaplan (selma@wamc.org)
