Apologies for not writing.
I’ve been in Texas visiting my mom. Apparently I am not yet in full blogging mode as I still forget to take pictures of interesting things. Not that much has been interesting, aside from the happy (to me at least) arrival of autumnal weather.

I did something stupid the day I left Knoxville. I took Garbo for an early morning trip across the street, which is level and safe so I did not take a flashlight. But she wanted to head up the street at the end of my driveway, which is steep and has some sharp drops at the curb. Stupidly I let her, and tumbled off a curb. For a moment I thought I wasn’t going anywhere, but when I did get myself up I found that although I had obviously twisted an ankle, I could walk on it. Back at the house, I saw no obvious break. I did a squeeze test for a high ankle of fibula fracture, and palpated my ankle bone and common injury sites (Ottawa Rules) but the pain I had was elsewhere. That doesn’t mean I didn’t have a problem. But weight bearing was not an issue so I decided I probably didn’t need an x-ra at that time. Besides, it would be a couple of hours before a walk-in clinic opened, and I wanted to get as far west as possible before hitting a storm front, so I just packed the car and left, figuring that by driving I was at least not putting weight on my ankle.
By the time I got to Dallas, the next day, my ankle felt better. I did stay mostly off it for days. Initially I had no pain at the ankle itself, just in my foot, some swelling, no bruising, and little pain on weight bearing. I did have pain on flexion and extension, so I used an ace bandage and hobbled around with crutches and a borrowed knee roller for a few days.

I did start to have pain at my ankle bone late Wednesday, five days after the fall, but not on weight bearing. Mostly at night when my foot was not in neutral position, and yesterday driving. I think I should stop at the orthopedic walk-in clinic when I get back to Knoxville today. Despite my lack of pain, a small fracture is not out of the question. I have also developed bruising across the base of my toes, but I don’t really have pain there.
We will see if I have been terribly foolish, or just mildly so, later today. I’m actually surprised I am admitting to this.
The pumpkin photos are from a mall in Dallas. The weather was delightfully cool in the mornings and evenings, warm and breezy during the day. As I head east the weather is becoming cooler and I needed a sweatshirt this morning when Garbo and I were out.
I have delayed my departure until just post sunrise. I decided I would rather face the early morning glare on the relatively empty interstate than in Nashville traffic.

The breakfast at this hotel is awful though. The only eggs are overcooked, tough as leather and just as dry. The coffee is not bad. I’m glad I picked up these little prosciutto rolls as a travel option in case I couldn’t find anything healthy on the road. I’ve opted for charcuterie in the room for breakfast. But I am ready to be home, in my own kitchen. Garbo is ready as well.
